Fox’s Marines were involved in
the capture of Gibraltar, its first Battle Honour.
Early history traces the exploits of the antecedent
Regiments, the 32nd of Foot (Cornwall) and the 46th
of Foot (South Devon), in theatres around the world
prior to their amalgamation in 1881 to form The Duke
of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. (DCLI).
Light Infantry status
was awarded by Queen Victoria to the 32nd of Foot
following the “Siege of Lucknow” in
1857 where the Regiment defended the Residency from
June to November during the Indian Uprising. A major
Battle Honour which is still celebrated annually by
the Regiment.
The display takes
you through the history of the antecedent Regiments
and continues through the major conflicts in South
Africa, the Great War and the Second World War up
to the eventual amalgamation with other fine County
Regiments to form “The Light Infantry” in
1969.
A new display area
was opened in April 2010 by HRH Princess Alexandra,
which included the volunteers, volunteer militia,
and Home Guard and completed the story of the County
Regiment of Cornwall. It leads into a more modern
display of The Light Infantry which moved to Bodmin
from Winchester with the formation of “The Rifles”.
This display enhances the collection, making it more
current and attracting a different audience. |
